Actionable SEO: Using the World Map
What does it do?
The Map tab in Site Explorer gives you a visual representation on where the referring domains to your site are hosted. They are displayed as dots on a map, larger and darker dots meaning the domain has a lot more backlinks to your site. This map allows you to Zoom in on a country, and by clicking on one of the ‘dots’ (referring domains) It will give you a summary of the links from the site and how many back links are coming from that domain.
Also you can select how many domains that are showed on the map. Lastly you can download the data to CSV where you can do some cool things with the data such as creating a bar chart.
What insight does it give us?
The newest additional to Site Explorer the world map can give you an insight to where your links are coming from, by visualising where in the world people are hosting sites that link to your site. This is useful not only for SEO but also your business’s marketing efforts. This tab can give you an understanding of the behaviour across boundaries when switching from one topic to another. Also it shows you where in the world your brand is strong or weak or even what products are popular in different regions so that you can respond with link building and marketing accordingly.
The Site Explorer version of the map only shows up to the top 1000 results. If you want to know the geographical location of all your backlinks, we show this in tabular form in advanced reports:
This report can be exported into a CSV file and can be quite useful in understanding the relative market share of a competitor in different markets, for example. If you used the above table for yourself, and for your competitor, and then overlay the data with internet user populations stats by country, you would be able to see where you may have the strongest and weakest market penetrations and compare these with the stats for your competition.
